How a board gets made

Every product on a board is ranked in repeated independent research runs, scored by a ranked game mechanic, and checked before it publishes.

  1. Products compete in a ranked game

Each run ranks about ten real contenders plus a few deliberate duds. Finish high and a product gains points, finish last and it loses them, and beating a strong product is worth more.

  2. Not every game asks the same thing

One weighs what expert reviewers concluded, one asks whether it is worth the money, one asks what owning it is like years later. They are built to disagree, and the disagreement is the signal.

  3. Every ranking has a real-world identity

A product is matched to its international barcode and the retail identifiers that go with it, so a name on a board is the exact thing on the shelf.

  4. A board is never finished

Runs keep going: new reviews, new photographs, more games on boards we have already ranked. A product waits off the board until it has enough behind it.
